Lake Eyre

Whether this is when the lake is dry and rugged or when rains to the north of Australia bring life to the region

Lake Eyre is a magnificent sight to behold

In the southwest corner of the Great Artesian Basin lies the 11,088 square kilometre great salt lake, Lake Eyre (or Kati Thanda- Lake Eyre).

This magnificent natural phenomenon is normally dry, however when the Northern regions of Australia receive significant rainfall, Lake Eyre is susceptible to flooding.

This transformation in the landscape creates an incredible flow-on effect, bringing in an abundance of birdlife and wildlife to the newly transformed region. Whether in the midst of flooding, or during a dry period, Lake Eyre is a truly magnificent sight to behold by land or by air.

  • Experience the wonderous sight of lake Eyre under flood from private jet.
  • Incorporate lake Eyre with a wonderful multi-day tour traversing the South Australian Outback, following in R.M. Williams’ footsteps.
  • Incorporate a visit to Lake Eyre with an outback experience showcasing the magnificent Flinders Ranges

Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are the region’s most popular seasons, with comfortable temperatures averaging between 23.1 – 37.7°C (73.6 – 99.8°F).

Summer (December to February) is a very hot time to visit the region, with average daily temperatures often hitting between 36.3 – 40.4°C (97.3 – 104.5°F). In winter (June to August) the weather is cooler but more comfortable, with average daily temperatures 21.3 – 24.9°C (70.3 – 76.8°F).

What do our experts say about Lake Eyre?

"I love the Australian outback and Lake Eyre is a destination I believe all guests should consider. Dry or flooded, this natural wonder is an absolute bucket-list experience."
