True North Cruises

One of the world’s finest adventure-cruise ships, The True North offers the ultimate in comfort and uninterrupted vistas as it plies the dramatic coastline of Australia.

True North Adventure Cruises are adventure-orientated, and wholly focussed on creating authentic and uncontrived luxury journeys. Unlike other cruise ships, The True North, is not equipped with a swimming pool or casino, in fact the spirit of the True North Adventure Cruises centres on getting the guests off the ship, and out exploring the different parts of the country. As True North Adventure Cruises say themselves, the ship is an ‘adventure platform’ from which guests can go on land expeditions.

The True North is a 50-metre long Australian designed, built, owned and operated luxury vessel, described by some as a ‘floating boutique hotel’. While The True North focus is authentic experience, this is not to say the quality of the accommodation has been sacrificed, in fact, quite the opposite. All cabins feature stylish décor, en-suite facilities, in-house entertainment and satellite telephones, and the talented chefs aboard the ship ensure the highest quality dining throughout the journey.

Rising 12-meters above the waterline with generous shared spaces and private cabins, The True North, somewhat paradoxically for a large vessel, is able to cruise into shallow river systems, enabling guests (36 guests in total) to experience the wilderness up close. The purpose-built vessel is able access areas large ships usually cannot, and the 6 smaller adventure boats allow the guests to break up and explore different regions or enjoy other activities – perfectly facilitating close-up wilderness in small-group comfort.  Daily activities include scenic walks, helicopter flights, cultural excursions, fishing, snorkelling, picnics, diving and exploring.

Kimberley Snapshot (7 Nights)

Day 1

Having boarded the ship the previous day, this is your first full day aboard The True North. Enjoy a delicious breakfast as your glide past Cockatoo and Koolan Islands, before being introduced to the famous Horizontal Falls. The Horizontal Falls are one of the most amazing natural features of the Kimberley region, and an unmissable attraction. You will get the chance to experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride. Watch as water rushes through the 10-20m gaps in the range, before moving on to the next exciting experience – Leadline creek, where you can try your luck at catching one of the regions notorious giant Barra.

Day 2

Day 2 sees you explore the crystal-clear Sale River, surrounded by stunning orange and red sandstone cliffs. Take a swim in your very own billabong, then cruise to another Kimberley icon, Montgomery Reef. Here you will have the opportunity to experience an extraordinary panorama of vast lagoons, tiny sandstone islets, and a central mangrove island, but you will only observe the wonder when the tide is out. Witness 140 square miles of the coral reef as it rises out of the ocean right before your very eyes. Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a privileged glimpse of another world.

Day 3

Cruise down the majestic Prince Regent River and down to the Kings Cascades, where The True North will manoeuvre the back of the ship right under the cascading water – don’t miss your chance to have a refreshing shower on deck! Your next adventure takes you to ‘Australia’s Jurassic Park’, where 21 different types of dinosaur tracks were found over 25-kilometre stretch, including the world’s biggest dinosaur footprint. Perhaps go up in True North’s helicopter to get a better look or remain on land exploring the fascinating area.

Day 4

Explore the breathtaking Hunter River, with stunning red cliffs set amongst the rainforest and mangroves. The river has 2 spectacular waterfalls, the Hunter Falls and Donkin Falls, both of which drop 90 metres. Enjoy an exhilarating hike to the hidden Jackson Falls, or take a helicopter ride to Naturalist Island for sunset drinks on the beach.

Day 5

Today there will be an opportunity to see the Bradshaws. Here in Vansittart Bay, there is a inlet called Rocky Cove that is home to some fascinating Bradshaw rock art, also known as the Gwion Gwion rock art and the Wandjina rock art. The Gwion Gwion rock art is claimed to be the earliest figurative art in the world. Next discover the Eagle Falls on the Drysdale River in the only way True North knows how, by helicopter. Enjoy a sumptuous picnic after landing.

Day 6

Visit another mighty river, The King George. Witness stunning sheer walls and majestic waterfalls at the end of several canyons. The river, of course, is the gateway to the King George Falls, which is one of the Kimberley’s most magnificent treasures. Here, the King George River plunges an extraordinary 100 metres over a sandstone cliff into tidal waters to create Western Australia’s highest twin waterfalls. Explore the base of the falls, then later it is onto the frontier port of Wyndham. This is the most northerly township in Western Australia.

Day 7

After 7 days of unrivalled adventure and luxury, it is time for it to come to an end. A transfer of a little over an hour takes you to Kununurra where you can continue on your travels or start the journey back home.
